“The Future of Reputation: Gossip, Rumor, and Privacy on the Internet” is a book I’ve been trying to get my hands on for a while. So you can imagine my reaction when I found out it’s available as a free download! All the chapters from Daniel J. Solove’s 2007 book (published by Yale University Press) are up in PDF format under a Creative Commons license. Super cool move—and I really hope more academics follow suit.
Here’s the table of contents, just so you know what you’re getting:
- Chapter 1 – Introduction: When Poop Goes Primetime
PART I: Rumor and Reputation in a Digital World
- Chapter 2 – How the Free Flow of Information Liberates and Constrains Us
- Chapter 3 – Gossip and the Virtues of Knowing Less
- Chapter 4 – Shaming and the Digital Scarlet Letter
PART II: Privacy, Free Speech, and the Law
-
Chapter 5 – The Role of Law
-
Chapter 6 – Free Speech, Anonymity, and Accountability
-
Chapter 7 – Privacy in an Overexposed World
-
Chapter 8 – Conclusion: The Future of Reputation
-
Notes & Index
You can grab each chapter (in PDF) over on the official book site. And if reading on screen isn’t your thing—or your printer hates you—you can always buy a physical copy here.
